Re-New: TOAST x Kettle’s Yard

TOAST and Kettle’s Yard invited five artists to create new work using waste materials.

I was given a selection of materials to choose from which had come from some part of the clothing production process and chose to work with waste yarns.

Diagonal Stripes was made using waste linen yarns from weaving mills and woollen yarns unraveled from TOAST KNITS.

Notes from the curators

Using materials that have structural properties such as paper, wire and horsehair, Hannah thinks sculpturally about her thread pathways to create forms that are technically ambitious.  Unravelling, twisting and folding materials within her weaving allows for new ideas to emerge. 

For this piece, Hannah unravelled damaged TOAST knitwear, made from linen and wool, to create a sculptural, cross-like construction, composed of six wefts.  The block colour of the Swedish lacing, running across the diagonal is a counterpoint to the more heathery, rich tones of the blue wool, which she has created by winding three yarns together.

The piece has been woven on the loom as a flat form, but carefully constructed in such a way that it opens up into a three-dimensional structure.
