Depending

An articulated woven sculpture exploring ideas about connection and intersection, made during the lockdowns of 2020-2021

Depending was created at time when our physical movements were restricted and we were hyperaware of our human, geographical and emotional connections.

It is woven as one continuous piece, thousands of lines of thread are joined together, intersect each other, hang from each other in an articulated sculpture.

The piece was made using a nylon warp and copper wefts. Copper is often used for transmitting heat and electricity.  As a material, it connects us, physically transporting the electrical currents which form our electrical networks and digital lives, copper serves as a reminder of how we connect with each other. Within the precise structure of the sculpture, the materials take on their own movement.

The piece is animated by changing light: in direct sunlight it shimmers or dazzles, in obscure atmospheres it becomes part of the shadows.
